Upcoming CTE Activities & Events (Summer 2012)

Summer’s nearly here (or already here for some of us), but for those of us who work in CTE, summers can be as busy as the normal school year. Here’s the evidence – a slew of fun, engaging, and exciting opportunities taking place this summer for students and faculty all over California.

JUNE 2012

Open House at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL)Pasadena, CA
The annual Open House at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. will be held on Saturday, June 9th & Sunday, June 10th, from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. This year’s theme, “Great Journeys,” invites visitors to share in the wonders of space through high-definition and 3-D videos, live demonstrations, interactions with scientists and engineers, and a first look at JPL’s new Earth Science Center. All are invited.

Summer Supervised Agriculture Experience (SAE) – Lamont and Arvin, CA
The SAE experience will expose students to the farming industry of Lamont and Arvin. Students will learn about irrigation practices, greenhouse management, livestock nutrition, livestock genetics, farm maintenance, career exploration, and leadership training. Students will be able to document their activities for sectional, regional, state and national recognition through FFA record books and proficiencies.  Two Arvin High agriculture teachers will provide supervision of agriculture activities. Students will be required to commit 2 hours a day. The SAE will run from June 3, 2012 to September 30, 2012. Arvin High School and incoming high school students are eligible to participate. Kern Regional Occupational Center Summer Session – Bakersfield, CA
Local middle and high school students are invited to participate in a summer school program at the Kern ROC. This summer session brings students from local Middle/Junior High Schools for placement into one of six ROP class offerings to work side-by-side with high school juniors and seniors.  Classes include opportunities for mentoring, job shadowing, community classroom, career research and exploration, and instruction to program standards for training industry specific skills necessary for employment. The summer school session begins June 4th and ends July 13th with classes operating Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.  Please contact Tess Lake at 661.831.3327 for more information.

Engineering, Construction and Manufacturing Summer CampPleasant Hill, CA
We are excited to announce that the 2012 Engineering, Construction and Manufacturing Summer Camp will take place June 18-22 from 8 AM to 4 PM each day, at Diablo Valley College.  High school students (incoming 11th and 12th graders) will earn 1 unit of college credit for five days of participation.  The camp offers summer enrichment opportunities for high school students and teachers to explore theory and practice in a week-long activity that blends hands-on exploration, field visits in industry, problem-solving and expert industry viewpoints. The camp is made possible by a collaborative effort by Diablo Valley College, the Contra Costa County Office of Education and the Contra Costa Economic Partnership Workforce Initiative. Teacher Training Workshop: High School Sustainability Certificate with an Energy EmphasisSan Rafael, CA
The Teacher Training for the High School Sustainability Certificate with an energy emphasis will prepare High School teachers to incorporate a new and innovative curriculum into their classrooms.  The certificate curriculum, developed by Strategic Energy Innovations, covers topics in climate change, fundamentals of energy, performing energy audits, solar site assessment, and green career paths for youth.  Participants in the training will receive an electronic copy of the certificate curriculum and a step-by-step training on how to implement the 16-lesson course.  In this interactive training the course instructor will review the curriculum’s six modules and teach sample lessons and hands-on activities using the accompanying toolkit. The workshop takes place on Tuesday, June 26, 2012 from 9:30 AM to 4 PM, and has a $150 fee, which includes training, lunch, and curriculum (early bird registration $125). July 2012

University of California Curriculum Integration Institute, Summer 2012 – Burlingame, CA
The University of California’s Summer 2012 UCCI Institutes are convening July 15-18 in Burlingame, California. At the Institutes, high school teachers and administrators meet and collaborate on the design of innovative model courses integrating CTE with academic (“a-g”) subjects. Once approved in the CTE and “a-g” areas, UCCI Institute courses are available for implementation by any California high school.

The summer session features two Institutes meeting concurrently, each devoted to its own combination of CTE industry sector and “a-g” subject area. The Institutes for Summer 2012 are:

  • Health Science and Medical Technology with history/social science (“a”)
  • Information and Communication Technologies with mathematics (“c”)

High school educators are invited to apply online now. The Institute is free to participants, whose meals and lodging costs are covered with the financial support of the California Department of Education via the CTE Pathways Initiative grants. Participants will also receive a $600 stipend.

August 2012

Regional Strategic Planning MeetingBakersfield, CA
The Southern & Eastern Sierra CTE Collaborative is meeting to set short and long term goals to continue our success in articulation reform and dual enrollment. We invite any CTE professional who wants to share their successes and learn form ours. The meeting will be held on Friday, August 3, 2012 from 9 AM to 3 PM at the Doubletree Hotel in Bakersfield, CA. Lunch will be served. Please RSVP to Bob Hawkes (bhawkes@kccd.edu).
